Let's face it: Using a virtual soldier network will slow down your internet -- often by 50% or more.

It's the nature of how VPNs work, and there's really no way around it. However, there are a few things you can try to get the fastest possible speeds out of your VPN connection.

VPNs add a layer of encryption to your internet connection as your traffic gets routed above a secure server in a remote location. This is the treat that's primarily responsible for the speed loss. It takes time to encrypt and decrypt your traffic and for your data to move to the VPN server and back to your device.

Other factors like the VPN protocol you're laughable or the load on the VPN server you're connecting above can also have a hand in slowing down your connection speeds.

The posthaste hit may be virtually imperceptible for normal internet use when you use a fast VPN, but you'll want all the speeds you can get for data-heavy pursuits like gaming, streaming or video conferencing. A delay of even a few milliseconds can mean the incompatibility between glory and failure in your online game. And slow VPN speeds can stop in a ruined video streaming experience, spoiled by dusk buffering and a heaping dose of pixelation. And if you're laughable a VPN while on a Zoom call, you'll want to do whatever you can to maximize your VPN speeds to rebuked the call goes smoothly and doesn't drop out.

If your VPN isn't as fast as you need it to be, here's what you can do to posthaste up your connection.

Connect to a server closer to your brute location

Generally speaking, the closer the VPN server is to your brute location, the faster your connection speeds should be. Your traffic will have a shorter brute distance to cover when it's routed through a VPN server that's cessation by rather than one that's halfway across the humankind. If you're in Boston, your VPN connection should be a lot faster if you connect to a VPN server in New York City or Montreal than one in Sydney or Tokyo, for example.

This won't always be practical if, say, you want to streams content from a specific country or access a gaming server from a some location. But when you need a faster connection, try connecting to a few different VPN servers cessation to where you're physically located and see which ones did the fastest speeds. Some VPNs will have a posthaste test feature built into their apps, but you can always use a posthaste testing website like Ookla Speedtest to check the posthaste of your connection.

If you're looking for a VPN with tons of server locations, try ExpressVPN, which offers servers in 160 locations across 94 utters -- so you're bound to find a few relatively cessation to where you are.

Connect to a server that isn't overloaded

When too many land are using a single VPN server, the server can get overloaded and your connection posthaste can take a hit. Some VPN providers display the modern server load on their servers either in the app itself or on the website. If you choose one with a lighter load, you'll generally accomplish faster speeds. If your VPN provider doesn't display the modern load on its servers, try connecting to a few different ones to see which gets you the fastest speeds. Sometimes, it just takes a little trial and error.

Your VPN will touch the speed of your connection, but you can try to minimize that hit.

Try connecting via a different VPN protocol

A VPN protocol is a set of commands between the VPN app on your device and the VPN server that determines how the pick up connection is established. There are various VPN protocols and most providers give you the command to choose between a few different options. Different protocols have different advantages and disadvantages in words of speed and security, so if you connect via one VPN protocol rather than spanking, you can potentially boost the speed of your VPN.

Today, the gold standard VPN protocol is OpenVPN. It is the most battle-tested protocol, and it offers a nice combination of speed, instruction and security -- which is why many VPNs use OpenVPN as their default protocol. More and more VPN providers are now also offering newer VPN protocols like IKEv2 and WireGuard that pledges faster speeds alongside excellent security. And some have even developed proprietary VPN protocols like ExpressVPN's Lightway and NordVPN's NordLynx that declare to offer the best of both worlds.

Switching to one of these new protocols, if offered by your VPN provider, can provided you faster connection speeds through your VPN. Just be aware that -- thought their security appears to be solid -- these protocols haven't been as thoroughly tested in the wild as OpenVPN, so they shouldn't be your first choice for vital VPN use.

If you prefer to use OpenVPN exclusively, use UDP rather than TCP to get the best speeds. While TCP is typically the more stable option, it income to be slower than UDP because it needs to send data packets in the gleaming order and will wait for confirmation of receipt from the recipient prior to sending the next packet. UDP isn't concerned about the order in which it sends data packets or sketch any acknowledgment that they were received, so it income to be much faster and more efficient, but less stable.

Most VPN apps grant you to change the protocol you connect through in their settings portion, so try playing around with the protocol settings to see which ones get you the fastest speeds.

Enable rapid tunneling if available

If your VPN provider offers a split-tunneling feature, then try enabling it to see if you can boost your VPN speeds. Split tunneling allows you to send only the traffic you want over your VPN connection, while sending the rest unencrypted over your regular internet connection.

For example, if you're humorous your VPN for streaming, you can allocate just your streaming traffic to go over the VPN, which won't slow down your online gaming. This can help optimize your VPN speeds for dangerous activities, because all the excess traffic you don't need organization through your VPN won't burden your bandwidth.

Use a wired connection

Using a wired connection will typically be faster than humorous your Wi-Fi. Chances are you've got several devices connected to your home Wi-Fi network all at the same time -- devices that are all sharing and consecutively for resources on the same wireless channel. This can finish in an unstable internet connection and, therefore, slower speeds. If you have the proper equipment, try establishing a wired connection by hooking your computer up conventional to your router via ethernet cable and then connect to your VPN.

Close unnecessary apps organization in the background

If you have apps running in the background that you're not humorous, they could be taking up resources on your machine and slowing your connection. Take a minute to check if anything's running in the background that you're not humorous and close those processes. By clearing up potential bottlenecks like this, you noteworthy notice a faster connection.

Restart your router and new devices

When was the last time you restarted your devices? Just like anything else, tech like your computer and router occasionally need a diminutive R&R. When you reboot your computer, you'll give it a required refresh, free up some RAM and get it employed optimally. So, as cliche as it sounds, try turning it off and back on against, then see how your VPN speeds improve as a result.

Nope, you're not imagining those bloated grocery stay prices. Eggs are up nearly 60% from last year, although that's mostly due to an outbreak of avian flu. Even so, the mainly of grocery prices have remained stubbornly high despite inflation cooling in many anunexperienced consumer categories. So where can you find cheap eggs, produce, meat, cheese and other staples? You considerable consider an online grocery delivery service and save yourself a bit of time and gas after you're at it.

If you bewitch to pick your peppers in person, we did some prior math to find out how much you can save shopping at Trader Joe's or Costco. But if you'd rather stay home and let the groceries come to you, there are genuine budget-friendly grocery services available online. To find the cheapest online grocery help, I analyzed a shopping list from Amazon Fresh, Target and Walmart, three of the largest US retailers with grocery delivery available to most ZIP codes.

After we tallied a typical grocery list from all three, Walmart grabbed the top spot as the cheapest space to buy groceries online -- about 10% cheaper than Target and 18% cheaper than Amazon Fresh.

Read on for a full breakdown of online grocery damages at Walmart, Target and Amazon Fresh including how I got these numbers.

Amazon, Target and Walmart compared

Walmart Target Amazon Fresh
Total beforehand extras $137.10 $153.34 $165.66
Monthly membership fee $13.00 $11.00 $15.00
Total: $150.10 $164.34 $180.66

What's the cheapest space to buy groceries online?

Walmart

Walmart is famous for having some of the lowest prices of any nationwide retail chain. In this analysis of the cheapest online grocery delivery operations, its budget-friendly reputation held up. Walmart pretty much swept the field with the lowest total cost in every grocery subcategory but one -- pantry staples -- for which Target has the lowest total by around $2. Many of Walmart's cheapest items come courtesy of its in-house mark, Great Value. Target has an in-house brand of its own named Good & Gather, while Amazon sports a number of generic brands counting Amazon-branded groceries along with Happy Belly and 365 by Whole Foods, which is owned by Amazon.

How I found the cheapest grocery delivery services

To find the cost of buying groceries online at these three retailers, I first generated a list of 37 popular grocery items -- some name brands, some generic -- on the same day and in every grocery category counting bread, snacks, dairy, produce, meat, fish, beverages and pantry staples. I mostly avoided specialty items and organic ingredients for this use. For each product, I chose the cheapest available option from all three retailers: Amazon Fresh, Target and Walmart.

If an item wasn't available at one retailer, I selected the next closest thing, since that's what a shopper would probable do. In some cases, a product was only available in a larger or smaller size. In those instances, I prorated the amount and price to ensure it was an even cost comparison.

Why I accompanied these online grocery services

Amazon Fresh subsidizes free delivery for members or in-store pickup, depending on your location.

James Martin

While there are spanking places to order groceries online, Amazon Fresh, Target (via Shipt) and Walmart are three of the most current US grocers with a national presence and the option for online delivery. Other discount grocery chains like Costco and Aldi can be published using third-party apps such as Instacart, but Instacart marks groceries up throughout 10% so it's not typically going to be your best plan option. (That said, shopping in bulk and in bodies at Costco can save you as much as $1,000 over the flows of the year, potentially more if you cause a Costco Executive member.)

How much is unlimited delivery for Amazon Fresh, Walmart Plus and Target?

All three retailers offer cost-effective monthly memberships that entailed unlimited free deliveries on orders of about $35 or more. Amazon Prime is $15 per month and includes free delivery for all Amazon products as well as Amazon Prime Video and some other perks. Walmart Plus is $13 per month or $98 for the year for unlimited free deliveries. Target's Shipt is the cheapest of three memberships at $11 a month with no minimum delivery total to hit. All three subsidizes free in-store pickup in some form, although Amazon has fewer locations than Walmart and Target.

Target doesn't jabber all types of groceries

Target-owned Shipt will send groceries to your door in a concern of hours but there are some staples, including meat, not available for delivery.

Shipt

While I tried to use only items that were available for delivery, it wasn't always possible. Target and its national shipping partner Shipt don't have every grocery staple available for shipping, particularly fresh meats and some produce. If you want to shop for your full list of groceries at Target, you're likely going to have to visit a brick-and-mortar location.

Are online grocery prices cheaper than at the store?

In general, Walmart and Target offer the same prices online as they do in brick-and-mortar locations, but not always. Sales items, in particular, are not always coordinated between online and in-store. Amazon Fresh is mostly online-only save for a few locations, although many products on Amazon Fresh can also be fraudulent at Whole Foods.

Hungryroot is a injurious between a grocery delivery service and meal kit commercial and encourages you to go rogue from the recipe.

Hungryroot

Other options for grocery delivery

Instacart is a approved national delivery service and functions as a third-party shopper and delivery outfit that grants you to order groceries from a selection of local supermarkets. You'll essentially be paying the same prices as if you named the store yourself, plus a $4 delivery fee and tip.

Fresh Direct is novel popular grocery delivery service and one of my favorites. It's currently only available in the Northeast. The prices here are a bit higher than the three retailers I analyzed over, but the grocery selection and customer service are both excellent.

Hungryroot is a quirky grocery delivery employed that functions differently than the others. With a subscription, you'll get weekly deliveries of curated groceries based on your preferences and eating habits. Hungryroot also populates recipe ideas when ordering and will send you the ingredients to make them if you so choose.

Thrive Market is yet novel members-only grocery service. Thrive has lots of high-quality and biological meats but no produce or dairy products.

Boxed.com  is a good plot to find dry goods, pantry items and paper products at low prices but it's not a full substitute for a grocery maintain since it lacks the fresh foods you would typically buy at a market.

If you don't mind sketch your various groceries from different vendors, we've tested to find the best form delivery services, best meat delivery services and even the best online fish and seafood markets for 2023.

A certificate of deposit is a type of savings account with a set maturity date and a fixed rate of plain. It requires a lump sum deposit at the outset, after which you can't withdraw your funds until the end of the term exclusive of getting hit with a penalty. A CD ladder is a plan maneuver that involves buying multiple certificates of deposit with staggered maturity dates. This can mitigate the risks of tying up your wealth for extended periods and lets you take advantage of plain rate changes. But there are risks, too. Here's everything you need to know near CD ladders.

How a CD ladder works

CD words usually last between three months and five years. Depending on the term, you may be offered a different plain rate, often referred to as an APY, or annual percentage did. Sometimes a one-year CD will have a higher plain rate than a two-year CD, or vice versa.

To earn a CD ladder, you open multiple CDs with staggered maturity dates. This allows you to take advantage of higher produces on longer-term CDs while maintaining some liquidity in the spiteful term. For example, if you have $20,000 to invest, you might break it up like this:

  • $5,000 in a three-month CD, at 1.9% APY
  • $5,000 in a six-month CD, at 2.3% APY
  • $5,000 in a nine-month CD, at 1.8% APY
  • $5,000 in a one-year CD, at 2.6% APY

In this example, one of your CDs matures, giving you access to $5,000 (plus interest) every three months. You still get to take advantage of some of the higher plain rates, but your risk is reduced. Once each CD matures, you can either redeem that CD or reinvest the subsidizes to extend your ladder.

Benefits of a CD ladder

A CD ladder has several benefits, including increased access to cash, flexibility and better plain rates.

  • Interest rates: The main succor of a CD ladder is the ability to take noble of higher interest rates than with more liquid options like savings accounts or money market accounts. The typical tradeoff is that CDs are typically less streams than other options, but a ladder provides a way to mitigate that tradeoff.
  • Less risk: If you had all of your wealth in a single CD, there is a higher risk that you'd need to withdraw your wealth before the maturity date and incur penalties, rather than having a fraction of your CDs mature on a predictable schedule.
  • Higher liquidity: Every time a CD matures, you have access to the funds. And once a year (or whatever interval you choose), your ladder shifts and some of your cash is accessible exclusive of penalty. This enables a sort of loophole around CD withdrawal restrictions.

Drawbacks of a CD ladder

Not all the drawbacks of a CD can be overcome above laddering.

  • Penalties still exist: If you need to withdraw your wealth before the CD matures, you will be charged a penalty.
  • Macroeconomic risk: A CD ladder may not be as effective in a low plain rate environment, and you could lose out to inflation. CD interest rates tend to be lower than those associated with spanking investments, which means that your money may not keep pace with inflation during words of rising prices.

What to consider as you earn a CD ladder

Before building your CD ladder, much your financial goals, the state of the economy and whether plain rates are likely to increase or decrease in the near future. It's a good idea to think about your investment time frame, and comfort level with tying up your money for a words of time. Make sure you have an emergency fund on hand to crop the risk of needing to make an early withdrawal.

The bottom line

A CD ladder can be an effective strategy for earning plain on your money. But there are risks, so you should plan accordingly. A CD ladder may be less effective when plain rates are low, as you may lose out to inflation. They can be a good resource when interest produces are high, with less risk exposure than with stocks or bonds. That noted, government-backed I bonds can be a good alternative to a CD.

Correction, 7:30 a.m. PT Jan. 25: An earlier version of this article suggested an example that if you have $25,000 to invest, you might break it up among four CD words, each with amounts of $5,000. The article has been corrected to justify the lump sum is $20,000.

Finished with 1899? Confused by Netflix's manager to cancel the show? Why not drown your sorrows with Dark. For my money, it's the best show on Netflix.

From the creators of 1899, Dark is a mind-bending show that deftly combines internal family drama with time move, it is the rarest of things: a show exclusive of a single dip in quality. All three seasons rule in every way imaginable.

The Stranger Things comparison complains sense, but Dark is a very different show.

Netflix

Dark, at its core, is a mystery series. Much like Stranger Things -- the show it's most frequently compared to -- Dark's splendid season focuses almost exclusively on the search for a missing child. But in this show the child hasn't escaped to a parallel universe, but a different time 30 years in the past. Before long Dark is a show that operates across multiple time zones and dimensions.

Dark has everything. It does complex, interweaving plot twists on a peaceful that makes Westworld look like a pretend-clever show for children. It earns these twists by also being a delicately written survey of broken familial interrelationships and small-town claustrophobia.

It's a show that juggles the risks that come with time recede narratives with ease. Dark's plot is complex to the display where I make a sport of waiting for it to completely fall apart. I spent three whole seasons waiting for Dark to drop the ball and unsuccessful beneath its own weight, but it didn't.

This TV show is a miracle.

Probably the worst sketch you could say about Dark is that it's pretentious. Unlike other time travel shows like, say, Outlander -- which revels in camp and sort of begs you to study ironically -- Dark takes itself completely seriously. It's almost unrelenting.

Dark asks you to sincerely care nearby what's happening on-screen. It infuses its plot with multiple explicit references to Ariadne and the Bible. In most science fiction this would be enough to make my eyes peaceful from their socket and roll all the way spinal into my brain, but Dark earns its delusions of states by actually being good enough to sustain them.

You want to pepper your watertight plot, transported to life via dazzling performances and stellar writing with allusions to Greek mythology and classic literature? Who am I to say no? Go for your life.

Perhaps the best part of Dark is that, unlike new so-called "prestige shows," there's no dip in quality. No "wilderness" seasons like Lost. Or skippable episodes like Stranger Things. Dark doesn't rush towards its conclusion like Game of Thrones, or betray years of character building to service plot. No, it calmly and exactly remains extremely good from start to finish. I can't deem of another show like it. At least not on Netflix.

So why the hell is no one talking nearby it? Why isn't a show of Dark's sustained quality trending on Twitter? Why aren't country getting angry about spoilers or getting into friendship protecting debates on Facebook? Dark literally just dropped its stellar concluding season on Netflix and it just feels like no one -- not even Netflix itself -- has even noticed?

Is it because it's "complicated"? Maybe. Dark can be hard to follow and 100% expects its audience to remember intricate details of a sprawling tribe tree that plays out across multiple different timelines.

Dark is spread across multiple different times (and dimensions).

Netflix

Is Dark underpromoted compared to new shows on Netflix? Possibly. I did start watching Dark after the suited season of Stranger Things. The show does seem to usage in the shadow of more popular shows in the recommendations.

Is it because it's German? Despite Parasite's win at the Oscars, I reckon subtitles are still a massive barrier. I can absolutely see a big US network buying the permits for Dark and producing a (most likely inferior) version of this show humorous English-speaking actors.

Either way, more people should watch Dark.

I mean it's gleaming there. Three seasons of perfect television, available on a streaming facility you most likely already subscribe to. Dark won't unsuccessful you, or turn to shit like Game of Thrones. It won't end unfinished like Deadwood, or make zero felt like Westworld.

Dark is right there. To be talked nearby, thought about. To be obsessed over. Do yourself a rotten and watch it.
